The Red Room (Poetry and Stories)

I Watched a Lion Lose His Pride

I watched
a lion crushed
beneath the weight
of a burning savanna.
I watched
a lion shorn of tooth
and claw.
I watched
a lion fed
like some fat king.

I watched
a lion drink memories
from stagnant water.
I watched
a lion in his habitat,
festooned with trappings
of freedom.
I watched
a lion as his roar
met with the cold air
of his fallow shade.
I watched
a lion lose
his pride
to history’s ash.
