A poem should be
a final destination, the distance

of “what if” ringing through Purgatory,
spectral as your lover’s silks

dressing the carpet,
limp as light worn nights

deprived of the moon.
A poem should be birds

falling from the sky,
the flightless mantra of somnolence.
